where do i find the backed-up trash?
 

i just did a backup of my HD, but forgot to empty the trash before doing so. it had about 5 GB of stuff in it, and i can't immediately see where on the backed up copy it is. how do i navigate to the Trash on the backed up copy of my HD?

I wouldn't worry about this right now: if you empty your trash and run Smart Update, it'll remove those items from the backup as well.
