Upgrading to Leopard?
 

Heyo!
I assume this question has been asked to death...but I'm looking to upgrade to Leopard from Tiger, and want to move my files. I want a Clean Install, but have all of my files and settings transferred over once I install...would SuperDuper! be of any use to me? I have a 500GB FireWire external, so if I needed to back up, I could. The only reason I ask is because I assume SuperDuper! moves the OS over, too...I could easily be wrong, though!
Also, I can't view ANY images on shirt-pocket.com, and the dl link for SD! doesn't work. Help?

I used SD to make a complete backup to my external firewire LaCie drive. I checked that I could boot off the external drive (I could but see my other posting on this subject).

I run a G4. The first attempt using the default option went belly-up. It also hosed my G4 boot disk. I tried re-installing Leopard but files left from the first attempt forced me back to the 'installation failed' point.

So I rebooted into Tiger using my external drive (thank you SD) and cleared out all the obvious stuff left by the first Leopard install on my G4 boot disk. I then decided to go for an erase and install option with Leopard since I saw little point in re-installing Tiger or even bothering to restore my backup from the external drive.

This installation went fine. I chose the option during the instal to migrate over my data from the external drive. All data transferred over flawlessly. I'm up and running Leopard.

Roundabout answer to your question but hope it helps/gives confidence.

Oh yes.....ensure you run disk utilities and repair permissions on the external drive.

So heres the skinny:
I recently had my Macbook stolen, after much grieving I am going to buy a MBP to cheer myself up. Before my Macbook got stolen, I had backed up a bootable clone (thankfully) with SuperDuper to an external HD.

My backed up system: Macbook 10.4.8
Western Digital Firewire/USB 2.0 Combo External Drive. There are two GUID volumes currently mounted on the drive. ---Backup: Bootable Clone (via SuperDuper) of everything except music/movies, ---Storage: Movies/Music

Now, I know the new MBP's ship with Leopard probably on a disk. I would like to find the most painless way to restore my old files, music (30 GB in Itunes), and applications--without having to re-enter serial numbers for app's--and have everything functional in Leopard. Now, I know some of my older apps havent been updated for Leopard yet. Should I restore the bootable clone to the Tiger OS that will most likely come pre-installed on my new MBP? Or install Leopard first than copy over everything. I unfortunately have never had to do this, so I guess what I'm asking is what is the best step-by-step method to have everything functional in Leopard?

I have read apples doc on using migration assistant, I do not however have the most up-to-date firmware on my bootable 10.4.8 clone. It also seems Dnanian suggests trying an upgrade instead of MD. What's the best option?

In this situation, I'd migrate, Drew -- just start up the new Mac, point it at the backup when prompted to copy from another Mac. When you're done, upgrade to Leopard if needed.

Thanks for your reply. So I don't need to worry about firmware out-of-date on clone, or verify permissions, clean cache, etc? When using MA, do I copy over apps as well as files? Then upgrade to Leopard if needed via disk, right?
Sorry, a bit newbish...been using SuperDuper for years now, just never had to actually restore, especially under these circumstances.

I'd also search the Installation Forum for Leopard on Apples' site to check if thereare any known issues with your model of Mac.

Might also be worth posting your question after doing the search.

The Migration Assistant copies both applications and files... and Roger offers good advice.
