iTunes music files

Hi, I've searched the forum, but haven't found any info on my question; if I've overlooked a thread, I apologize in advance.

I use SD simply: to clone my iTunes music folder, which is very large (c. 40K files) and on an external drive, to another external drive. Simple enough, and I've had no problems thus far - the software is fabulous.

My question is this: I am in the process of retagging most of my library to make it more searchable, but it is not the main Artist or Album tags that concern me (seeing as the iTunes music folder (or in my case, drive) is organized by Artist) it is the Date, Composer and Genre tags that I am updating.
Will SD, when using Smart Backup, make the changes to my backup drive? In changing various minor tags, do the audio files themselves change enough that SD will recognize a change, and thus update the clone?
I know that with the Artist tag SD can recognize the change because the folder that houses the files actually changes, but I am more concerned about the other tags. I feel secure that if a catastrophic drive failure occurs I will not be losing any music, but I would hate to have to redo all the more subtle work that I am focussing on now.

Thanks in advance,
David

For most tags, they're stored in the file(s), and the data is updated next time you run your Smart Update. You should ensure you're backing up your iTunes database as well, since it may keep aspects of the metadata in that file as well.

Thanks for the reply.
I assume, when you say iTunes database file, that you mean the iTunes Library xml file?

That's one part, but there's also a corresponding database (non-XML).
