Is there any kind of log I can access so when I login in the morning, I can see what SD did, if there were any errors and how long it took etc?

It may be better to install Growl (http://www.growl.info), which we support. You can have it notify you in various ways about whether your manual or scheduled backups succeeded or failed, etc.

But don't growl notifications disappear after a few seconds? I'm more interested in having a summary of the evening's events that I can quickly review in the morning when I log in. Anything like that available?

Not if you don't configure them that way. Growl notification can be sticky, and can even be emailed.
