Have to Force Quit Finder to access desktop after backup.
 

I can't access any icons on my desktop after an overnight SuperDuper smart update backup. Doesn't happen on weekends which is the only time SuperDuper doesn't run. I'm backing up to an external USB drive. The backup itself is successful as I've checked and booted from the external. As far as I know this is the only scheduled activity I've setup. Any ideas?

This seems to be a bug in Leopard, actually, that a few users have reported. Is your dock on the side?

I have the same problem with my MB Air and iomega USB hard drive. And, yes, my dock is on the side. Sounds like I should try it with the dock on the bottom!

Yes: give that a try and see if it helps.

Having done some limited testing on two machines, I am seeing mixed results.

1. New MB Air and iomega USB hard drive: My experience agrees with what you have said. Have to re-launch Finder after a back-up if Dock is on left side and running a back-up from scheduled. Moving Dock to bottom fixed the issue. Starting a back-up manually also does not cause a problem - even if the Dock is on the side.

2. Also tried it on my approximately 2-year-old iMac with a firewire hard drive for back-up. I had NO problems on this set-up - regardless of whether the Dock was on the bottom or the left side.

Both are Intel Core 2 Duo's running 10.5.6.

We don't interact with the dock at all, so we're not sure why this happens, but the "dock at the bottom" workaround seems to avoid whatever's going on in Leopard that causes the problem for some users.

Finder/Desktop Freeze after Auto-Launch

I'm seeing the Desktop become unusable after SuperDuper auto-launches on multiple machines as well. The Dock location doesn't appear to be an issue as I've now seen the Desktop freeze after SD auto-launches on more than one machine with the Dock on the bottom.

Manual backups to not freeze the Desktop -only backups which occur after SD has auto-launched. If a scheduled backup auto-launches and fails (due to the destination disk not being available), the Desktop is fine.

Normal Finder and Dock functionality isn't affected. Just the icons on the Desktop are frozen.

In all the cases I've seen, quitting and re-launching SuperDuper unsticks the Desktop. I've never had to force-quit the Finder.

I am having the same problem with my dock on the bottom. Running Leopard 10.5.7 with 2.4 ghz unibody 2008 15" MBP

What happens if you quit and relaunch SD, as kvandruten indicates in his note?
