Can't see data within sparse image backup
 

I was doing a routine check of my backup file (scheduled backup to a NAS on my home network). I have two accounts on my Mac - one for me (called Mike) and one called Kids. I have successfully restored files from the backups in the past. However, now when I open the sparse image, I do not see the account called 'mike' listed. I only see 'kids' and 'shared'. Has my backup become corrupted? The file size is still about right (225GB), so it's not empty. All of the data is stored under my account. There isn't much under kids. I'm guessing this is an authentication issue of some kind. I hope I'm just missing something simple. Any help would be appreciated.

I think something has likely hidden the folder -- it's probably hidden on the source, too.

Try going to the folder with Finder's "Go To Folder" command -- open /Volumes/your-mounted-image-name/Users/Mike (or mike, depending)...

I must be doing something wrong. I am getting volume not found. Here's what I'm typing.

/Volumes/NAS-SHARE/MTK iMac Backup.sparseimage/Users/mike

where NAS-SHARE is the name of my shared folder
where MTK iMac Backup.sparseimage is the name of my backup set

I get the same error if I replace 'mike' with 'kids'

No, that's not right. You're going to do something like (you need to MOUNT the image):

/Volumes/MTK iMac Backup/Users/mike

Dave, looks like you are right about it being hidden. I mounted the image, went to the users folder and did a 'Go to Folder' and typed 'mike'. That opened up my folder and I can see the contents.

Glad to see the data is intact. Any idea how it became hidden and/or how I can undo that?

Check the /Users folder on the source. Hidden there too?

So I checked my hard drive, and the problem exists there, too. So that explains why it was hidden on my backup. I have no idea how my folder would have become hidden (I'm not sure I even know how to do this on a mac).

Yes, I expected that. Well -- we could un-hide it with the developer tools, but since you don't know how it happened, it might not be a good idea to fix it: maybe hunt around on the Apple discussion forums to see what 3rd party tool might do something like this?

Dave, thanks for all of your help. Your responses were unbelievably fast. For anyone reading this thread, note the time from my original post and all of Dave's responses. This thread went from opened to closed in something like ten minutes. My time here was after 10PM in the Eastern US. Simply amazing!!!!

I figured I would check out my backups as I was tempted to try out the Leopard upgrade. But knowing better, I figured I would check out my backups before attempting that task. Dave was able to help me uncover a problem that I was not aware I was even having. I would have panicked had I needed to get my data back and was unable to find it. Nevertheless, SuperDuper was doing EXACTLY what you would expect it to do. And reaffirming my love for this product.
