Password Protection

I plan on keeping a bootable copy of my computer backed up to an external HD, then running smart updates every week. Here is my dilemma:

Is there a way to have incremental backups to that copy and also have them password protected? If I've got an external HD sitting around I'd hate to prying eyes get a hold of all that personal info.

I know I can make an encrypted disk image through apple's Disk Utility. But if I went down that road wouldn't I have to back up my entire computer each time? Seems tedious and time consuming. There has to be a way to do that incrementally. Is there an option I'm overlooking in SuperDuper that can take care of this?

Create an encrypted sparse image, then point SD! at that (select it in "Disk Image...", even though it's grayed out, and ignore the warning). You can Smart Update to it like any other image.

I tried this too, but it didn't work for me. The log file says:

| 01:35:50 PM | Info | ......COMMAND => Mounting backup
| 01:35:50 PM | Info | Waiting for backup to mount.
| 01:35:52 PM | Info | Waiting for backup to mount.
| 01:35:54 PM | Info | Waiting for backup to mount.
| 01:35:56 PM | Info | Waiting for backup to mount.
| 01:35:58 PM | Info | Waiting for backup to mount.
| 01:35:58 PM | Error | Failed to mount 'backup'

I set the everyone permissions to read/write, but that didn't change anything. Any other suggestions? When creating the image in Apple Disk Utility, I wasn't sure of all the options, like partition type (I chose "Single Partition-Apple Partition Map". Perhaps there was a problem here.

Thanks in advance.
