3 Questions About Cloning...

As luck would have it, I cloned my G4 iBook the evening before its hard drive failed. Can I drag-and-drop the cloned files from one external drive to another so that I will have two copies of the iBook? Or does the cloning have to be done by SD! in order to work?

I don't know whether the new drive will be returned with a system installed on it (Apple is doing the repair under an extended AppleCare warranty). If it comes back without a system installed, can I clone the external volume to the bare drive or should I install a system first and then use SD! to return the iBook to its original state?

Finally, how much extra space does SD! require when performing a Smart Update on a nearly-full external drive partition? I made my partition 30GB in order to match the drive in the iBook, but the partition has only MBs of free space remaining and cloning stalls part-way through the process due to a lack of free space.

Lucky you!

You definitely don't want to drag-and-drop: it just won't preserve all the things you need. Please use SD!

It's likely to be returned with an empty drive with a standard OS setup on it. The easiest recovery would probably be to use the built-in Migration Assistant during the first startup to bring your stuff into the new drive.

Smart Update needs different amounts of space depending on the configuration of the drive. The User's Guide "Troubleshooting" section has some details.

Thanks for the heads-up about the drag-and-drop method and using Migration Assistant to restore the iBook drive.

The trouble-shooting guide didn't specifically address the partition size issue except for offering possible work-arounds, but it did explain how SD! works to some extent. The partition I created on the new external is 2GB more than the max size of the iBook drive; I suspect that this will be enough extra space to perform Smart Updates in the future.
