synology Nas

Hi,

I have to backup 8 computers each day. For now I have been doing a network backup with SD, using a western digital my book, connected to an imac.
As data grow, I would like to use a Nas drive, with some Raid ability. It seems that the Cube Station cs407 from synology would be a good choice, but I have some things I would like to ask :
1- cube station uses EXT3, FAT or NTFS. Can I make a bootable backup with EXT3 file system ?
2- it has Gigabit ethernet and USB interface, no firewire to boot on. Can I restore a computer directly by the network ?

thanks for your help.
If anyone has any advice for this nas drive, or any other one, it would be great ...

You'd want to use ext3, yes. (NTFS will also work.)

While you can restore a Mac from the network, you'll have to do so with another Mac, putting the mac to be restored in FireWire target disk mode ("T" during startup) and copying from the image to it with the Mac that has full network access.

thanks for the quick answer.

if NTFS and EXT3 are usable, which one should I prefer ?

as for the network restore, if I understand well, I can't I boot from osX disc, use the disk tool utility to restore and choose the backup image over the network ? why so ?

Can I use USB to connect the backup drive to the "master "mac I'll use to restore ?

If not, does anyone knows a NAS drive with firewire ?

thanks a lot for helping

Well, I really don't know which one it handles better, so it's hard to say. But if it can be attached with USB, OSX can at least read NTFS, whereas it can't read ext3 (except over a network, of course).
