Partition external hard drive

I want to back up my 60gb macbook hard drive so i can replace it with a new 160gb drive.
i have an external hard drive that i want to use which has over 70gb free space on it. however, there is already approx 100gb of files on the hard drive that i have put on there as i ran out of space on my macbook.

my question is whether creating the backup with superduper will overwrite the existing data on the external hard drive.

i have seen some mention of partitioning on this forum. my external hard drive is currently not partitioned. would this be necessary. is there any way to add a partition to my external hard drive?

thank you kindly!

In general, I'd recommend getting a drive dock that you can put the 160GB drive into. You can then copy directly to the new drive in the dock, and swap it without involving the other drive.

If you drop me a note to support, I'll provide more detailed instructions.
