SuperDuper and The new Mactels

Dave,
Do you know if the new Intel-chipped iMac (for example) will allow users to start/re-start with Option Key (into open firmware) to select a bootable external or internal cloned backup volume? I'd be highly disappointed if this functionality went away with the migration to Intel chips.

Option-boot is still there, but SuperDuper! cloned volumes won't work until we release an Intel-compatibile build... the disk formats are quite different.

So, if someone wants to migrate from a current G4, say, to a new Mactel, they would need to use the Apple migration utility instead of cloning their external firewire backup over to the new Mac (if I understand you correctly)?

Do you have a timeframe for releasing a 'universal' SuperDuper build? I find your app indispensable for my home office....thanks!

That's absolutely right. You would NOT way to try to boot an Intel machine from a non-Intel mac: the partitioning scheme is different.

We don't have an official timeframe for the Universal build, but we're working on it... it'll be a free update for all users.

I'll be very interested in updating our copies to the universal build myself once that's out. I find SD! to be the best tool for cloning systems, and I'm going to be doing a whole lot of cloning in just a few weeks for new iMacs that our company will be ordering.

I hope I'll be able to use SuperDuper when the time comes. I would hate to have to set up all those new systems separately.

Oh, and thanks for making such an indispensable application.

Thanks, mm2270. I'm looking forward to seeing the production hardware myself! :)
