To me, it looks like your backup drive is formatted for DOS/Windows, as FAT32. That file system has a 4gb limit per file, and your image probably went...

Disk Warrior *should* have done the same thing, or similar, but it's worth a try with Disk Utility, too.

The problem is definitely a low-level drive issue, though.

OK, Nick. The problem here is that the file system is corrupted in a way that's causing the kernel to throw up its hands and panic.

What I'd do is boot from your Tiger DVD and run Disk Utility...
