So does anybody know another product that can compare two volumes?

No, he wrote as much.

I too want to compare whole volumes. Acutely a Time Machine restore vs an older SuperDuper clone. But also to verify backups.

I've used rsync --dry-run, but it's a pain to...

That's fine, an after copy script can enable them again. The re-scan will take a while, but no space will be wasted.

Disable Time Machine before cloning

I've had it happen that booting from a clone with the Time Machine drive still attached would start a backup, after which the system on the internal drive refused to do incremental backups. Since...

Now it quits, but only 40 to 60 seconds after I issued the command from the Dock.

(I never use the lock, it's always closed, and just enter credentials whenever I clone)

This problem never went away for me, over various machines. Now it's still there on a fresh 10.8 install with not even the preferences copied. The only sadly unusual thing I'm doing is working as a...

When I clone into an image I want to verify that before multiplying it.

I tried rsync --dry-run --checksum, but it only displays results at the very end, which is annoying for tens of gigabytes.

I used Lion Recovery, the result booted fine and everything worked. Disconcerting not to know how it differs from the original. I'll have to dig around next Friday 13th ;)

[OT] What does Time Machine leave out?

I verified my Time Machine backup by restoring it to an external drive. Afterwards I re-used that drive as another clone. Surprisingly SD copied almost all files again, even though they should be...

After verifying a disk image the inode of the file and UUID of the volume are written to an extended attribute. So merely opening a DMG on the target makes it different in the eyes of SuperDuper.

Disk image copied every time

I have some huge compressed DMG that I mount often, but not even their "last opened" date changes. Yet SD copies them every time anew. What piece of metadata am I overlooking?

Boot manager not always shows name of clone

I often try booting my iMac G5 with pressed alt key after cloning. Sometimes the clone will show up with its own volume name, sometimes it will have the same name as the source volume.
