Just a pleasing update:

Just updated to Sonoma 14.3, cloned it to my external SSD, and it*s still bootable, problem-free.

Bootable clone on Apple silicon absolutely needs fast external drive

This may not resolve everyone’s problems, but it’s important to know that for clones to be bootable on silicon Macs (I have an M2 MBAir/Sonoma) you absolutely need to have a very fast external drive....

Smile Finally a bootable clone - and more

I*ve been bugging you about creating a bootable clone. Now I*ve done it, and even more: I also wanted to offload Windows stuff from my MBAir M2 which was filling up onto an external drive and use it...

My main theory is that when I tell my Mac to boot from the external drive, it shuts down briefly and loses power before the re-boot begins. I assume that’s normal behavior. Upon regaining power and...

Thanks for the feedback, Michael. So it sounds like re-booting from the clone isn*t currently possible on M2 Macs using Monterey, as I have (or before), and the problem won*t be solved by using a...

Good, and I*m glad I asked. For now, I*m content that I have a clone I could repopulate from. Once you have an M2 Mac and have tried it, or someone with experience could answer this thread, I*d...

Thanks, Dave, but some of what you say is a bit above my head; I'm simply interested in whether/how I can boot from the clone with my M2 MBA. (The Safe Mode trial was unsuccessful with the Toshiba...

Clone won't boot

Using a MBAir M2, Monterey 12.5.1, SD 3.6.2, external Toshiba HDD connected via hub’s USB 3 Superspeed. I can make a clone (which I assume is OK), but can’t boot from it - as I was able to on...

Thanks, Dave, I'll look more closely into all that. BTW, both Retrospect and Arq look like they might be useful.

NAS/Drive over WiFi: reliability?

I'd be more than willing to use this, but I'm not tech savvy enough to be sure I understand (and I don't want to spend money on something that won't work). Doesn't this connect over my local WiFi -...

Post SD backups over local WiFi network = Time Machine?

Apple’s AirPort Utility/TimeCapsule duo (= Time Machine (TM) over WiFi locally) is becoming obsolete (my TC’s getting old and will surely fail sooner or later), so I’m trying to create a robust and...

If TM did TM things reasonably reliably and reasonably well, as it once did, that'd be fine. While I'm still using TM, the only reliable backup I have are my SD clones. To be honest, my intention is...

Time Machine replacement?

I'm increasingly fed up with Time Machine and would like to see whether there's another way, another app, which can do the same thing, best would be over WiFi. Though I've used SD for a long time,...

T2 Mac, Catalina, now clone won’t boot

Been using SD for years, never a problem. Got a 2020 MB Air with Catalina 2 weeks ago (disappointed with the Mac, hate Catalina). Made full SD backup, then 3 or 4 Smart Backups since then. I just now...

Feature Request: Clone Whole Disk

I have two volumes on my disk, the main boot volume and TTP's eDrive (actually, I think there's a 3rd, the OS's recovery volume), and some users may have even more. SD only clones 1 volume...

Re defragmenting: yes and no. I read over in the MacFixIt Forums that while the fragmented files on the source disk are laid down contiguously on the target disk, there is something additional (I...

In addition to what Dave said, note that an image must be "restored" in order to be used. This is not only an extra step, it doesn't always work according to plan - and when it doesn't, "game over."...

Unhappy What then?

OK, Dave. If you say so, I trust it's so. But then what?

Scenario (not yet done, because I don't yet have the hardware in my hands, but this is what I plan to do): I've got a new MacBook, and a...
