And you copied, in full, using "Backup - all files" from the FireWire drive to the internal? Does the internal drive appear as a choice in the Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences?

Did you partition the new drive as GUID? Were you able to start up from the FireWire drive? It wasn't clear from your message how you copied things back to the new drive.

Well... "copy newer" doesn't really create a bootable result in all cases, even if the drive is successfully blessed. Also, are you sure the drive was properly partitioned as GUID (for Intel) or...
