It is true, no question. ASR's basically the only fast way to do block copying.

Most of our users aren't trying to image a whole series of machines from a single copy, so the issues we've all run into with this haven't come to the fore. What I'd do, in your case, is create a read/write DMG and then use "asr imagescan" to get it ready for ASR. That'll avoid conversion, and should work a treat...
