Reinstalling Mac OS X and restoring from backup?

Hello,

So I punched a bunch of holes in my operating system (deleted important files trying to successfully reinstall itunes to make my iphone mount again -- it's a long story, but I just need to start over) and need to reinstall the OS. If I restore from my SuperDuper backup, will it overwrite my new install of the OS? Does the SuperDuper backup include the OS or does it restore your files to the OS that's installed on the target drive (my iBook's internal HD)?

Basically, what I want to do is this: I'd like to erase & install my OS so that I'm starting with all new system-related files. I'd prefer not to have to drag all my old files back onto my computer, and essentially rebuild my whole setup by hand, but if that's what I have to do, I will. Is there a way to efficiently do this?
