I keep a 10.3.9 boot volume around for one purpose, using BitPim (not 10.4 compatible) to sync my cell phone. I just bought a 1.5 GHz Mac mini that was designed after the release of 10.4, and used SD! to clone these utility volumes, rather than rebuild them. Booting the mini off this cloned 10.3.9, my screen looked like the CPU was having the migraine from hell, barely readable. So to be sure, I rebuilt 10.3.9. Same problem. The issue represented in Dave's comment above bubbled to the surface of my consciousness.

I got the mini working fine by setting the screen resolution lower, then higher again. This was intended to be a workaround, not a fix, but it worked permanently as a fix. Apple tech support was very surprised I got away with this.

Moral: OSX 'travels' well, and suspecting SD! should be way down your list, in the event of issues like mine. If you have issues, don't give up.
