On one of the machines I use, I have some files like that. They are all named after iPods that have been connected to the machine at one point or another. "rita's ip" is probably Rita's iPod.

The "._name" format is one that I have seen used on non-HFS filesystems to store extra HFS data (resource fork stuff?). My guess is that it means that the volume "rita's ip" is a FAT32 (or other non-HFS) formatted device and whoever was using it ended up doing something that made the OS want to store some resource data for the root folder of the filesystem. Since the ._name files are usually stored next to the main file, the file for the extra data of the root folder ends up in /Volumes instead of in the volume itself.

All the files of this kind that I have seen are all very small (82 bytes). It probably won't hurt to delete yours, but since it is so small it does not hurt much to leave it there either.
