A1: it's certainly impossible to directly boot, yes. You can copy directly to iSCSI volumes formatted as HFS+ (e.g. Drobo, ReadyNAS iSCSI), but you'd still have to restore to a real volume.
A2: Since you have to use an image/bundle, the underlying volume on the share could be anything that supported large files.
A3: No, not over a network. Directly, yes. Over a network, you'd have to use an image/bundle (unless you're using iSCSI).
A4: You're doomed with the ShareSpace, except as covered above, but regardless no booting until restored.
