Can't boot from SD USB backup
Yes, I did Backup - all files.
Yes, I'm using Smart Update Yes, I have an Intel-based Mac (brand new 2.53GHz MBP) I was assured that I could do this using a USB drive, but when I go to startup disk it doesn't show up. Tried booting from the install disk, but I can't really get to any kind of finder window where I could launch SD from the backup drive, or at least I didn't see a way to do that. what am I missing?

It's likely not partitioned properly, Allison - see the FAQ entry about your drive not being bootable. (And the User's Guide explains how to restore with Disk Utility if you can't start up from the backup...)
