Script to check disk before backup ?

I'm using a scheduled backup to clone my iMac disk, so that I have a copy in case of disaster. But it seems to make sense to check the health of the hard disk before doing a backup to make sure I don't try to clone a faulty system.

Is there a script available to check the health of the disk before attempting to do a backup?

thanks.
