Repairing permissions

Do you have a position or recommendation on turning on or off the repair permissions option in SD? I realize this is not really a SD issue, since you present it only as an option, but I am wondering if repairing permissions is among the recommended standard operations for SD. I have always enabled this when using SD (Tiger and Leopard) but after seeing this forum thread

I am wondering if it would be best to not repair permissions anymore. It seems to take a longer time under Leopard to repair the permissions than to actually conduct the backup itself! Also in the above posts, some pundits are saying that repairing permissions can do more harm than good and to leave them alone (unless presented with a permissions like problem).
