Yes, as I noted further on in my message, that does seem to work. ("I did try the hint about minimizing the SD window while backing up, and that got me all the way through one Intel & 10.4.8 backup so far.")

I'd just rather not have to worry about doing that workaround, and cautiously peek at SD to see if the backup is complete (plus the same program crashing glitches appear at various times in other programs, too, and I'd rather not have to worry about those sudden application quits either.)
