I/O Exception(16): Resource Busy

I have recently started experiencing this message when I try to back up my hard drive. My computer's drive is almost full (5 GB left on a 160 GB drive) and I've been trying to back up in preparation for replacing the drive.

I've been getting this message whenever I attempt to back up the drive. The backup will typically run into this between 40 and 70 GB; always a different file. I have repaired permissions and run Disk Utility to repair the disk. Tech Tool reports everything is fine. I have tried erase and backup; same error message.

The drive I am backing up to is a 320 GB partitioned to 100 GB and 220 GB; I'm backing up to the 220 GB partition.

Is there any way around this? Is it a sign that the original hard drive (or the target) is too full?

Have you tried restarting your Mac? Using some AntiVirus program or similar?

The mac's been restarted several times in between the various attempts. I do not constantly run an antivirus program; I do scan the hard drive occasionally (once a month or so) just for fun. Never had any hits.

Super Duper has always worked well with this computer through four years and two different hard drives. This particular hard drive has been in place for a little over three years

No recent system upgrades either; still running System 10.5.8.

Is the AV program's "autoscan" feature turned on?
