Archive a Backup? Image to DVD?

Hello, I've used SD a few times, I really like it's reliability and simplicity. Plan to upgrade soon to use the advanced features.

My question: Could I create an archival copy on DVD (to store off-site) with the following method?

A) Use SD to backup my entire boot drive to a disk image.

B) Burn that image to DVD(s) *

* I realize that image will be larger than a DVD. Does a Disk Image 'look' like one big file to OSX? Could I use a program like 'MacHacha' to split that file into 1.9 GB segments to burn (2 segments per) to DVD.

Note: MacHacha appears to be just a front end to the standard terminal split and cat (join) commands, so I feel pretty safe with this method - not really a 'proprietary' method.

If no one knows this from experience, I hope to try it later this week, I'll report back success/failure.

Thanks!

You could try that, or you could take the sparse image and try using hdiutil to split it in the directly supported (by Apple) way.

But, either will work.

Note, though, that I'd generally suggest a second FireWire drive. They're faster and very stable -- especially when off. Plus, they're not too expensive, when you take your time into consideration..

Thanks Dave, sounds good, I'll look into hdiutil also.

I am using an ext FW drive for routine backups, I'd just like to get one to DVD and offsite every six months or so, just in case, and have one DVD set for my kids iBook at college. FW drives are reasonable, but I don't really want to buy a 2nd and 3rd one for this requirement.

Fair enough... I'm sure you'll get something working you'll be happy with!
