proper way to disconnect External HD with SuperDuper

Hi;

I backed up for the first time no problem with a external Western Digital pro 500.

I have a laptop needed to take it and I put the HD icon in the trash and there was no problem.

I re-plugged the WD and the Icons appeared.

I needed to take the laptop a few days later and I did the same thing in that I moved the icon to the trash and when I removed the firewire plug a notice came on saying I was supposed to go thru the finder to disconnect the external HD and i may have lost some data.

Can you tell me or point me to a file that shows me the proper way to disconnect the HD
from the laptop

thank You

Greg
