Smart Update just isn't working!
1. I am using an external networked lacie USB drive formatted efs2 attached to my ubuntu box to attempt to update my macbook pro image to.
2. I am running Leopard 5.6 on the macbook and SuperDuper 2.5(84) 3. I've ensured all programs are shut down on the mac and the ubuntu server 4. "mounting" takes 45 minutes (Please see log info below) 5. I let it run for over 20 hours and it evaluated 9.5 GB, saw 5.x GB were already updated and actually copied 600 MB. Not much has changed since my original image created Dec 14 (files were deleted) 6. I have verified that the lacie hard drive is functioning well. 7. Hardwiring the machines into the router didn't make any difference as opposed to wireless. 8. I notice the following in the console when launching SuperDuper: 18/12/08 8:21:37 PM SuperDuper![144] .scriptSuite warning for attribute 'boundsAsQDRect' of class 'NSWindow' in suite 'NSCoreSuite': 'NSData<QDRect>' is not a valid type name.9. The SuperDuper log shows nothing wrong: | 08:21:50 PM | Info | SuperDuper!, 2.5 (84), path: /Applications/SuperDuper!.app, Mac OS 10.5.6 build 9G55 (i386)10. But this will sit there for as long as I let it. It doesn't hang, but responds when I click "stop" 11. I've ensured no antivirus programs are running and even shutdown my Net Monitor to see if that would help. Your patience and assistance is soooo gratefully appreciated. Dawn |

The long mount is due to the disk mounting process scanning the image for proper construction (which was a security fix some time ago).
It's clearly running slowly, and I can only suggest this is because your network connection, drive, server, etc is running exceptionally slowly... faster NAS devices (such as the ReadyNAS Pro) run at near FireWire speeds.

I'm having a similar problem

Based on that, you need to restart your Mac.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the quick reply. Before I concede re: my very slow network (which I don't believe it is, it is my media streaming server that is accessed by 4 computers throughout the house with no issue), I have a couple of questions/concerns: 1. It took about 12 hours to create the first image with about 56 GB of data. Based on what I read on this forum, this isn't exceptionally slow (nor is it exceptionally fast) 2. I understand the mount process (watching the logs like a hawk), but 45 minutes? But that isn't my concern. It is 20 hours later and only 600 MB of data. It's like it is getting "stuck" somewhere during analysis. If I do the math, 12 hours for 56 GB for full image creation and 20 hours for 600 MB for smart update... I guess that could be called "a fraction" of the time for smart update???? 3. Please explain the console: 18/12/08 8:21:37 PM SuperDuper![144] .scriptSuite warning for attribute 'boundsAsQDRect' of class 'NSWindow' in suite 'NSCoreSuite': 'NSData<QDRect>' is not a valid type name. 18/12/08 8:21:37 PM SuperDuper![144] .scriptSuite warning for type 'NSTextStorage' attribute 'name' of class 'NSApplication' in suite 'NSCoreSuite': AppleScript name references may not work for this property because its type is not NSString-derived. 18/12/08 8:21:37 PM SuperDuper![144] .scriptSuite warning for type 'NSTextStorage' attribute 'lastComponentOfFileName' of class 'NSDocument' in suite 'NSCoreSuite': AppleScript name references may not work for this property because its type is not NSString-derived. 18/12/08 8:21:37 PM SuperDuper![144] .scriptSuite warning for attribute 'boundsAsQDRect' of class 'NSWindow' in suite 'NSCoreSuite': 'NSData<QDRect>' is not a valid type name. 18/12/08 8:21:37 PM SuperDuper![144] .scriptSuite warning for type 'NSTextStorage' attribute 'title' of class 'NSWindow' in suite 'NSCoreSuite': AppleScript name references may not work for this property because its type is not NSString-derived. 18/12/08 8:21:37 PM SuperDuper![144] .scriptSuite warning for superclass of class 'NSAttachmentTextStorage' in suite 'NSTextSuite': 'NSString' is not a valid class name. I'm feeling a bit like I'm talking to a windows developer "Just upgrade your hardware". All my other processes I run to/from this server run well enough. I don't want to add another peripheral just to run SuperDuper!! UNLESS someone can show me that it really is my network server. In fact, I do norton backups to that server from an XP with no issue whatsoever. I really am trying to phase out all the windows and replace with Linux and mac, but being able to create backups is imperative for me. After I created the first complete image, I bought/registered SuperDuper. I'd sure like this to work because it seems like such a recommended solution. I really do appreciate your time. I am just a little frustrated... |

1. On a slow device (not necessarily a slow *network*, but a slow device), that's not unusual, although not great.
2. Your device -- or network, it's hard to tell -- is running very slowly if things took that long. We can only run as quickly as your device and network let us run. 3. Those are compatibility warnings because the scripting dictionary is compatible all the way back to Jaguar. I'm sorry that you don't like the fact that I'm pointing out some device slowness given the way things are accessed. If you want to check, it's easy enough to try a similar backup on a local, properly formatted drive and see if it runs as quickly as you'd expect. If it does, the difference is the device and/or network. As far as "Norton Backups" go - it's a different system, with a different filesystem, different network stacks, accessing the drive in different ways. They can't really be compared.

I'm also experiencing issues
I have been using SuperDuper for a number of years without issue and then on 12/17 I had my first backup failure (with more to follow). I have unmounted my external HD, restarted my iMac, repaired disk and remounted without success.
The error message has something to do with removing an item (journal) - operation not permitted. I sent the whole error into support but thought I'd ask here and see what others experience might be. Thank You. |
