Thank you!

Under Disk Utility, if I select LaCie
Partition
Options
Apple Partition Map (was Master Boot Record)
OK
uncheck Mac OS 9 Disk Drivers
(repartitions, erasing any data)

Then I redid the SD Backup. When it's finished, I can reboot,
holding down the Option key, select the LaCie drive, and
boot from the external drive.
