replacing HD

Hi, i was wondering, i'm going to upgrade my harddrive in my macbook to a larger harddrive. How would i use superduper to transfer everything in my old harddrive to my new harddrive without having to buy an external enclosure. I already have an external harddrive that i can use as maybe an intermediate between the two harddrives.

If i back it up and transfer it to an external hd, and then reinstall osX into the new hd and then run the image from the external to replace it would that work?

would superduper make a bootable file so i could just put it onto the new hd and it would automatically make an exact copy of my old harddrive onto my new hd?

sorry im a little confused about this whole process.
