Supposing the computer from which the SD backup was performed dies. If I get an essentially identical computer, should I just be able to boot from that FW backup drive on the new computer, then do a full SD backup to the new computers internal system drive?

I tried that, and the result has some problems: HELP doesn't function at all (it looks like it tries to start, then just dies: all HELP, not just SD); if I start SD and try to schedule a backup, I get a message that there was an error (no addition specification of the type of error) in the script. There are probably other issues as well, but I've just found those.

The computers in question are essentially identical iMac G5, 1.8Ghz, 1GB memory, internal 250GB computers; they were bought at the same time about three years ago, one for my daughter and one for my spouse (don't ask...).

Is there something else I need to be doing to restore to a different computer that was backed up?

++++++ in another thread, I found this, and it seems to work:

Do the following command in Terminal:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/\
Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister \
-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
