Talking Panther and Tiger on one mac???

I am about to migrate over to tiger, but I'm very paranoid. I have an external HD, which I already partitioned and I was wondering, if I clone my drive now running Panther onto my external HD, and then I do a clean install of Tiger on my macs internal HD, would I be able to boot in panther from my external HD when needed? If so what would be the best approach to this? Also is there a way to make a clone of my disk running panther that is self contained, What I mean is a clone of panther that does not share anything at all with my original sitting on my macs internal HD? Thank you very much for your help.

Hey, Ed. (Hopefully, it's Ed -- slap me if not.)

Hey, it's not paranoia if the OS is out to get you, right?

OK, so -- "Backup - all files" doesn't share anything with the main volume. So, you can make that clone then *detach* the external and put it aside so Tiger doesn't touch it (think "Spotlight"). Then, go ahead and upgrade to Tiger (no need to Clean Install right out of the gate), and you should be good to go.

If you want to clean install, you'll have to attach the Panther copy when it asks to Migrate your settings. But, that lets Tiger touch the drive, so be aware!

Hope that helps.

Unhappy

Hi dnanian, thanks for the quick response,

ok so your saying to use feature "Back - all files", ok. I have a question

1. Will I be able to boot up from this feature, like I did with "Safety clone - shared users and applications".

2. Also I have a 250 gig External HD which has 3 partitions. One partition I use for Itunes, Iphoto, and large video files. Second partition I use for Backup, and the third partition is the one I want to use with SuperDuper!. However your saying "*detach* the external and put it aside so Tiger doesn't touch it (think "Spotlight")." My question is, I use the other partitions constantly so detaching is not an option, what if I was to eject the 3rd partition of the drive which is the one I will be using with SuperDuper!, do you think that Tiger will still be able to touch it?? If it does then I will have to buy a small separate Ext HD. But what do you think?

By the way you can call me ed.

Hey, no sad faces here, Ed.

"Backup - all files" is just as bootable as a Safety Clone. The difference is that it doesn't share any information, which is exactly what you were looking for. (If you can accept the sharing, you can keep the Safety Clone, which will work, too -- but will share your user files and some applications, if you chose that version of the Sandbox.)

You can't just eject one partition out of three: when you try, I'm pretty sure all will unmount. Spotlight won't "hurt" your Panther drive, but it was just something that would touch it -- and you sounded like you wanted to "vault" the clone more than anything else.

Note that I've got a Panther Safety Clone here on my system that I use all the time, and it's been touched by Tiger. No problems there, but try not to use Panther disk utilities on a Tiger volume -- Apple specifically recommends against that, probably because the disk format has changed a bit in Tiger. While I don't think you can hurt a Panther-sourced volume, I'd avoid it nevertheless.
