I've located the case from way back in January, and his particular problem was, indeed, his FireWire drive failing under load, which then caused various weird panics.

He determined, after some work, that the panic itself was caused by his Wacom tablet driver, which was an old version, but that might not be relevant in your case.

If you could send your System Profiler report to me via email (to the support address), I'll take a look and see if I can find a cause.

I'd also give Safe Boot a try, to see if that helps. To do so, hold down Shift while powering on, and keep it down. Then, once you reach the desktop, try SD! again and see if it succeeds.
