Anticipating Migration and Upgrades

I have an older G4 PowerMac (Sawtooth) running 10.3.9. I'm currently backing up my data (but not the system) onto DVDs or CDs.
Here's my situation: The main drive, containing OSX and 9, is the original 9 GB and nearly maxed out. A second internal drive is 112 GB and contains most of my applications and data; currently about 15 GB. So, there's hardly any room on one and plenty on the other. I want to migrate to 10.4 and am thinking about installing 10.4 on the larger drive (changing it to the start-up) and leaving 9 (and possibly 10.3) on the smaller. I have not yet purchased an external FW/USB drive, but surely will to assist in this transition. I am also soon to receive an additional 512 MB of RAM (for a total of 1.2 GB) and an upgrade to my graphics card.
Can you recommend a strategy for the migration and the sequencing?
Thanks!
Fremont Dave
