I/O error while backing up
Hello!
I'm trying to back up my MacBook hard drive to an external drive via SuperDuper! but it fails to copy everytime, saying it's unable to copy a certain file (which is different every time). I searched this support forum for a solution and decided do "zero" the external hard drive, without success. I asked help in another Mac forum and I realised my partition scheme wasn't "GUID_partition_scheme" so I fixed that and tried again... and I'm still unable to complete a backup. So I'm back here, aking directly for help this time Is there a way to know if it's a hardware problem? Me external hard drive is a 250 GB Seagate in a NexStar3 USB/FW enclosure. I used the Firewire interface to backup. Thanks! Luc |

Hi, Luc. If the file is different every time, it's likely that you're having interface issues (hardware). You can see what device is causing problems by looking at the system.log -- it'll indicate an I/O error with a device ID (something like "disk2s1") that you can then match with disks listed with either Disk Utility or System Profiler.
My guess is that it's the NexStar3 controller. I'd try the USB interface to see if that behaves better...

USB interface tried, and made its proofs.
I backed up all my MacBook drive without any problem. So, doctor, what is your diagnosis? I'll try to backup again with FW, and post my log here if you need it. Thanks! Luc Last edited by Zed; 08-22-2006 at 10:48 PM. |

My diagnosis is that it's likely that this is a non-Oxford based drive, and isn't fully compatible with OS X on its Firewire end...

I was sure It'd be ok this time... backup was almost finished. Does the diagnosis still stands? |

Was this with FireWire? If so, yes, diagnosis still stands.
