Second try to NAS -- another failure

To save time -- I only requested USER be copied. It looks like it failed very quickly.

What's weird is there a "image drive icon" mounted on my desktop that is named "Backup_8_25_2007" which is the name of my backup! It contains everything up to the point of failure. Why is it on my Desktop?

And, there is also "Backup_8_25_2007.sparseimage" in the folder I created in NETHDD. So, SD did write to the correct spot.

That's not weird at all; the desktop icon is the mounted volume, just like if you inserted a CD in the drive.

As I indicated in a response to your mail, I think the problem is that NETHDD is not properly handling large volumes, or is failing for other reasons.

Do feel SD works better with a FireWire drive that is bootable than with sparse-images to a NAS? If so, I'll buy a drive.

But, here's my worry. The SD manual claims my first run's Warnings and Error are from "low level disk errors." If the SD manual is correct, SD will still not work.

Strangely, you'll note there was no string of Warnings this time -- yet the very same Pictures directory was copied. Did the "bad files" on my Mac's disk suddenly fix themselves? Or, were they never bad in the first place?

Despite the fact you seem sure SD doesn't have a bug, I'm worried that when I need to Restore I'll encounter another set of errors and warnings. Is there any way to "test" a restore to verify both the write and read work?

PS: Both the first and second run wrote 6GB to the NAS before failing. This is far more than the 4GB limit of FAT32. Could something be limiting the sparse-image to 6GB? Or, do you think the NAS has a bug not related to FAT32?

It's so hard to say. If the files aren't damaged on the source (which is easy to test), then there's something going on with the destination. Whether that's physical damage to the NAS drive, networking issues, protocol issues, etc -- I just don't know.

As a primary backup, I definitely prefer a bootable FireWire drive.

It seems some NAS use FAT32 but have built-in driver that breaks big files into chunks of no more than 4GB each. Supposedly this breaks dmg images. Perhaps that is what's happening here. EN2/3 works with files but perhaps not images.

The file system used on these types of Iomega network hard drives is EXT3.

No complaints found on google about this drive.

Yes -- you recommend I try this.

While we sort this out, for safety, if I copied /user/steve to the NAS -- would OS X copy everything?

In a worse case situation I can always restore the sys and applications. It's my data I worry about.

As far as using Finder to copy, sure, you could likely copy directly to the drive.
