"Failed to copy files from Macintosh HD..."
Hello Folks:
Consider myself expert level user of SD, using it for years. but I am running into a consistent error recently: I am making a master image of a new Mac (for restoration/testing purposes), and I am now newly getting the error message: "Failed to copy files from Macintosh HD to ..." I am making a new sparseimage from a Leopard 10.5.5 Image (that has been tested, Onyx maintenance run on it to confirm, etc), and have run into this error starting a couple months ago (my workaround was to use CCC). But I always preferred SD for sparseimage creation and updating. According to the log, SD choked due to: "| Error | SD Copy: Error "Operation not permitted" encountered while setting HFS meta data for /Volumes/Leopard 10.5.5..." (ps: this is the name the backup volume image/sparseimage I am trying to create) So it looks like a meta data error that SD cannot copy? Never seen this before with any backup program. Can anybody enlighten me? Thanks P.S: Already researched the Users' Guide "Troubleshooting" section with no relief for this particular problem. Last edited by MilMascaras; 09-16-2008 at 03:19 PM. I'd need to see the full log; if you could send it to support with the "Send to shirt pocket" button, I'll take a look. Note that this almost always means a damaged set of OS files in Leopard...

WOW, Thanks for the quick reply:
At this time, my test Mac does not have exchange setup (use webbased email only), so the "Send To Shirt Pocket... command never works. so if you'll indulge me, I included "meaty part" of the log. I am trying to create a new image from a properly Target mode mounted volume, that I want to back up to a new image called: "Leopard 10.5.5 Universal Image" Here is the main part of the log: ================================ | 12:50:50 PM | Info | ......COMMAND => Cloning Macintosh HD to Leopard 10.5.5 Universal Image | 12:50:50 PM | Info | Copying skip files using script: /Users/joeadmin/Library/Application Support/SuperDuper!/Copy Scripts/Standard Scripts/Backup - all files.dset | 12:50:50 PM | Info | ACLs from Macintosh HD will not be copied to Leopard 10.5.5 Universal Image. | 12:50:50 PM | Info | Loading 22 commands from copy script /Applications/SuperDuper!.app/Contents/Resources/Copy Scripts/Exclude system temporary files.dset | 12:50:50 PM | Info | Loading 6 commands from copy script /Applications/SuperDuper!.app/Contents/Resources/Copy Scripts/Exclude system cache files.dset | 12:50:50 PM | Info | Loading 1 commands from copy script /Applications/SuperDuper!.app/Contents/Resources/Copy Scripts/Exclude Norton FileSaver files.dset | 12:50:50 PM | Info | Loading 1 commands from copy script /Applications/SuperDuper!.app/Contents/Resources/Copy Scripts/Exclude Google Desktop Index files.dset | 12:50:50 PM | Info | Loading 1 commands from copy script /Applications/SuperDuper!.app/Contents/Resources/Copy Scripts/Exclude iTunes Temporary files.dset | 12:50:50 PM | Info | Loading 0 commands from copy script /Users/joeadmin/Library/Application Support/SuperDuper!/Copy Scripts/Standard Scripts/Backup - all files.dset | 12:50:50 PM | Info | /Volumes/Macintosh HD 1 | 12:50:53 PM | Info | /Volumes/Macintosh HD 1/dev | 12:50:53 PM | Info | /Volumes/Macintosh HD 1/cores | 12:50:53 PM | Info | /Volumes/Macintosh HD 1/Network | 12:50:53 PM | Info | /Volumes/Macintosh HD 1/.TemporaryItems | 12:50:53 PM | Info | /Volumes/Macintosh HD 1/private | 12:50:54 PM | Info | -rw-r--r-- 1 0 99 - 0 Sep 16 12:50 /Volumes/Leopard 10.5.5 Universal Image/private/var/root/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/Local/DataReferences/349/5FC5FB96-3BC7-41F0-B926-47DC58B1CF1E.truth.data | 12:50:54 PM | Error | SDCopy: Error "Operation not permitted" encountered while setting HFS meta data for /Volumes/Leopard 10.5.5 Universal Image/private/var/root/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/Local/DataReferences/349/5FC5FB96-3BC7-41F0-B926-47DC58B1CF1E.truth.data of type: 8\n: Operation not permitted P.S: I noticed it was choking on a file owned by Root in syncservices. So, on subsequent attempts, I enabled Root, logged in as root, and ran SD from my Root login, yet still got identical error. Last edited by MilMascaras; 09-16-2008 at 06:58 PM. |

SuperDuper!'s copy engine runs as root, so that won't make a difference.
Anyway -- this is what I thought it was (although it's in your sync data). Use iSync's preferences to reset your sync data and then give it another try.

I opened up iSync and the only reset was for sync history, but I've never used iSync on this computer before. All syncing I've done has been through .Mac (now MobileMe). But I've reset the history and trying again. Kevin |

Right: I just sent a response to your support request suggesting exactly that. iSync's reset should also reset Mobile Me (it's confusing, I know).
