It's likely that your disk is formatted for DOS/Windows, Tom. Try erasing the FireWire drive with Disk Utility.
Alternatively, if you want to leave it in Windows format, you can store a sparse image on the drive using the instructions in this FAQ: http://www.shirt-pocket.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81 Hope that helps...
