Copy Files stats don't reflect what's on Time Machine HD (2.7)

I'm nearly 36 hours into a copy of a 1.5 TB Time Machine backup drive onto a new 3 TB drive. So I've had plenty of time to watch the Copy Files dynamic report.

The two attached screenshots show two cases of erroneous Copy Files reports:
  1. With a progress bar showing 80-90% copied, Copy Files shows only 602 GB copied, while Finder > Get Info shows twice that amount (1.2 TB) on the new HD.
  2. After suspending the original copy and restarting, the followup Smart Update shows 954 GB evaluated and 1,105 GB already up to date, i.e., there's more up-to-date than has been evaluated.

In another thread, Dave acknowledges problems with Copy Files stats in the 2.7 release. I'm opening this new thread to isolate this problem and make it easier to find.
