OK: the reason that you're having trouble is that your USB drive is formatted for MS-DOS, rather than for Macintosh. If you erase it with Disk Utility and use "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as the format, you'll be able to write directly to it, and you won't hit the 4GB file limit you're running into here.
