Problem during full backup to external

I was trying out the software on my wife's iMac. I set the program to do a full backup to a folder on an external Lacie firewire drive, with settings to then create an ASR Apple compatible image, I think. The program went through all steps until the next to last step to create the Apple compatible part before unmounting the new image. That next to last step ran from 5 pm last night to 7 am this morning and never completed. I had to stop it. I examined the image that was mounted and it looked fine on the external drive. It would mount and unmount.

Did I do something wrong? Is the new image reliable to restore to a new drive? It was working with about 12 gig of files, by the way.
